Today, we meet the beautiful, young and talented Kenyan lady behind this successful social media business, Jewelry designer: Wanjiru Ng’ethe.
1. Tell us about yourself, Including who you are and how you got there?
Am the only daughter to parents of three. I am a full time jewelry designer and a social media business owner. This journey began as a hobby right after high-school, I was initially designing greeting cards in high school and I think as I tried to improve my skills I stumbled on jewelry making and at the time I was such a hog on earrings so one thing led to another and here we are
2.What’s your design style? What makes you unique in the industry?
My design style is highly inspired by both the bohemian and African culture and my use of color with brass makes my unique in my creations.
3. What kind of Individual wears your jewelry?
The lady that loves unique pieces and color. She loves her African Culture and wants to embrace it while keeping it modern.
4. As a designer/Artist, where do you draw your Inspiration from?
Imagination, I see it in my mind and I draw it ( when patience allows) other times its from a bohemian/African piece that leads to my creations.
5. What’s it like to see someone in the streets wearing your jewelry?
OMG, how do I even explain this hahaha it automatically puts a smile on my face, I promise you, on my low days, it make me smile and get wet eyes at the same time ( kwanza those ‘I loved….’ messages are like a lovers text :p )
6. who is/are your favorite designer(s)? local and international?
Locally I admire Adel De Jak because she crafts art and they are pieces you see and know they are by her brand.
Internationally, Diane Von, she’s a fashion designer and her persistence in her passion for the wrap dresses is downright very inspiring as she continually improves on them and succeeding in her field
7. which piece would you say is the best you have ever created? or your favorite?
funny I can’t pick, my previous collection was my favorite I thought, yes, this I will never get over, then I started working on another, oh my… I am even excited just thinking about them. I think am like a parent to all my pieces ( cliche line coming) but the love is immeasurable
8. what advice would you give to someone looking to become a jewelry designer?
To be passionate, believe in yourself and be prepared to learn, it’s fun too
9. what has been your biggest challenge and victory so far?
Biggest challenge is getting trust from first time customer, with no physical location it can be hard to convince clients that you will deliver what they can only see virtually.
victory: Getting an interview on KTN hahaha, being on TV for my craft ( WATCH HERE skip to minute 10:45 )
10. what are your goals?
To be a house hold name, the go to shop.
